Craniosacral Therapy

Now widely practiced around the world, Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is gentle, non-invasive, hands-on treatment that supports your body's innate capacity to balance and heal itself.

By sensing how your body’s natural rhythms are being expressed, a skilled Craniosacral Therapist will notice the restriction, contraction and congestion that may be underlying the pain and discomfort being experienced. By using this subtle yet potent approach, tension and stress can release and resolve so that flow and ease return, thus encouraging the body towards a new level of balance.

People come to see me for all sorts of reasons. Some are seeking help with physical problems such as headaches, migraines, neck and shoulder pain. Others are looking for support with stress, anxiety or low mood. Many people see me to help them reconnect to a sense of well being.

An adult treatment will usually last an hour and in the initial appointment will include a written case history – where we talk about why you have come and your past medical history. Typically you will lie on your back, fully clothed on the treatment couch. The treatment will generally begin with making light contact at your head, feet or base of the spine and sometimes the focus of the treatment may be on areas other than where you are experiencing your symptoms. As the session continues you will often experience a progressive sense of relaxation and calm.

Philip Humpherys - Craniosacral Therapist Exeter

Philip Humphreys RCST ITEC

Practicing Craniosacral Therapy in Exeter, East Devon & Mid Devon

Whilst looking for a way to deal with the chronic pain that I suffered after a series of accidents as a teenager, and having tried many different therapies, I came across Craniosacral Therapy. This proved to be life changing. It gave me insight into why I was still experiencing the effects of accident trauma years after the event and began the process of change.

I had already trained in massage and deep tissue bodywork but knew that this was what I wanted to do. I then went on to complete comprehensive trainings with Bhadrena Tschumi in India (1993) and Franklyn Sills of the Karuna Institute, Devon UK (1998).

I have now been practicing Craniosacral Therapy for over 30 years in the UK and abroad and am a registered member (RCST) of the Craniosacral Therapy Association UK. I have also been involved in teaching and tutoring in India, Germany and the UK

I’ve worked with people of all ages, from babies a few days old to those in their eighties, who have come to see me for a wide variety of reasons.

Over the years I have continued my education and learning, developing a wider and deeper understanding of the interconnections between our emotional, mental and physical health. This has enabled me to work more effectively with stress and trauma based issues. Some of the trainings completed include: Working with Shock and Trauma (1999; 2018), Organ and Visceral Work (1999), Prenatal & Birth Dynamics (1999), Prenatal & Birth Therapy Training - Ray Castellino, (2000).

I am also a qualified masseur (ITEC, 1993) and deep tissue bodyworker (1991), a teacher (Cert Ed, Post 16, University of Plymouth, 2003). I am a qualified as facilitator for The Living Inquiries (2019), which is a form of mindful inquiry and have been training with Dr. Jim Feil in Formative Embodiment.

“I first came to Phil when suffering from bruxism - teeth grinding to you and I! I was experiencing daily headaches and tension in my jaw and shoulders. After only a couple of craniosacral treatments my headaches disappeared.

On my next visit to the dentist he commented on the fact that I had stopped grinding my teeth. He was so impressed with the results that he now recommends Craniosacral Therapy to other patients suffering from bruxism

“Working with Phil has been transformational. It offered me deep healing when I was in a very stuck place (physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually). The rare mix of talking therapies {mindful inquiry} and bodywork has allowed me to go deep into my experiences and stories about myself in a truly embodied way. I’ve understood myself from a different perspective, which has enabled me to approach challenges and choices in my life in a way that feels very centred and true.”

“For me, Phil is a reset button. Slowly all the aches, pains and niggles get worse, and start to interfere with having a good time. Then it’s my session and everything gets fixed, body and soul. Phil is one of those rare people that really know what they are doing and has my complete confidence.”

“I have had a number of sessions with Phil now, and I find them very healing on many levels. He is very present with you, listens intently and picks up on things others miss. The mixture of skilful self inquiry directed questions , along with the cranial sacral gentle bodywork is a powerful combination. I highly recommend Phil. I always come out feeling more grounded, less stressed and more positive than when I went in.

I have had migraines throughout menopause for the past 12 years and now can’t imagine why I did not seek Phil’s help sooner! The treatment is so pleasant. No noisy, jerky movements like going to other types of therapists. I am unable to have regular sessions; as I live on an island, but my migraines have been less in intensity, duration and frequency. I advised my daughter to take her 6 day old baby following his traumatic birth. He’s relaxed, happy and thriving. I was a midwife for over thirty years.
Thank-you Phil.
